Hollywood Tongue-biters: Separating Fact from Fiction

A PhD student working at the Museum of Tropical Queensland will use the recently released Hollywood horror movie, The Bay, as the basis for separating fact from fiction about tongue-biting fish parasites called isopods in a free public talk at the Museum on Tuesday 12 February 2013 at 12noon.

Miss Melissa Martin, a marine biologist from Malaysia who is studying the Museum’s extensive isopod collection, was fascinated by the bizarre life cycles of the fish parasites during her university studies and has already identified several new isopod species.

The movie, The Bay, which was originally titled Isopod, was released in November 2012 and tells a sensational story of mutant fish parasites that infect people in a small town in the USA.
