Discover More Talk - June

Discover More Talks, our series of monthly lectures, are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 12noon. The talks cover a wide range of subjects and are delivered by experts in the relevant field.

This month's Discover More Talk by historian Dr Lyndon Megarrity is part of a number of talks this year marking Townsville's sesquicentennial year.

Dr Megarrity's talk will focus on the life and times of Sir Robert Philp, a Scottish-born merchant who co-founded Burns, Philp & Co. and subsequently represented Townsville in Queensland parliament for nearly 30 years. As the Premier of Queensland from 1899 to 1903 and 1907 to 1908, Philp championed North Queensland interests with an emphasis on supporting the mining and sugar industries. This presentation will reveal the private man behind the public face, and places his contribution to North Queensland in its historical context.
Townsville and Burdekin locals receive free entry to the Museum on the day thanks to the support of their local councils (excluding school holidays).
