Celebrate the opening of National Science Week at the Museum of Tropical Queensland with an action-packed program of talks, tours and activities.

Back of Hours Tours

10.15am, 11.15am & 12.15pm 

Take an exclusive tour through the back passages of the Museum, visiting our vast Cultures and Histories store and one of the largest coral collections in the world.

12 people per tour, bookings essential at the Museum reception on the day. Attendees must be able to stand for 45 minutes, be wearing closed in shoes and be over 10 years old.

Researcher Talks

Hear about the latest research being undertaken at the Museum. Each talk runs for approx 45 mins with question time allowed at the end.

11am - Dr Robyn Cumming  Bryozoans: Mini Dinosaurs of the Deep

12noon  - Dr Espen Knutsen Sea Monsters from the Arctic

1pm - Dr Paul Muir Deep Reefs of the Great Barrier Reef

Beau's Buddies

10am and 11am

Little scientists under 5 can learn all about a mystery specimen, listen to a story and take part in a take home craft activity. Ideal for parents and their children to learn something new together!

Marine Biology Discovery Station

Gets hands on with unique marine species and learn how to identify corals. Bring in your beachcombing find to have it identified by an expert and look through a microscope to see different marine organisms.

Palaeontology Discovery Station

Learn more about fossils and the science behind digging up the past. Bring in your own fossil ind to be identified by experts and have a go at preparing a real fossil in the lab.

Palaeo Playspace

Kids can dress up as a palaeontologist, dig for fossils in the dig pit plus design and wear their very own dino mask. Plus meet our NEW Baby T-Rex Dinosaur and enter the naming competition to win a $100 Museum Shop voucher.

Taxidermy Demonstations

Visit our volunteer taxidermists in this Great Gallery to learn about the art and science behind taxidermy.

Plus take the time to explore the Museum galleries including the latest travelling exhibitions Dinosaur rEvolution: Secrets of Survival and Evolution: Torres Strait MasksDuring your visit enjoy lunch or a coffee waterside at the Museum Cafe open from 10am.
