Yongala: Centenary on the seabed
Objects from the SS Yongala will be on display at the Museum of Tropical Queensland from 21 March – 2 May 2011.
The display is part of a series of community wide commemorative events to mark 100 years since the SS Yongala wrecked in waters south of Townsville during a cyclone on 23 March 1911.
The objects are part of the Queensland Museum maritime collections and were recovered from the wreck site during field work undertaken in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
The display showcases a small yet fascinating selection of objects including:
• The safe plate from the Yongala’s Chubb safe.
• The chronometer
• Pocket watch
• Fob watch chain
• Ceramic floor tile
122 passengers and crew were on board, none survived to provide a first hand account of exactly what went wrong.
The objects recovered from the site are an important link to the Yongala and ensure the tragedy will never be forgotten.
