Karakoram: a photographic journey

Jon Stephenson on the ridgetop of K12

Dr Stephenson, long-term Townsville resident, founder of the James Cook University Geology Department and Honorary Associate of the museum, was developing the exhibition when he passed away in May this year.

The photographs chronicle his 1960 expedition to the Karakoram region of the Himalayas, and consist of dozens of newly-digitised colour images. This expedition saw him come within 500m of the then-unclaimed summit of K12 (7500m).

The Karakoram exhibition was funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund, a Queensland Government and Townsville City Council partnership to support local arts and culture.
