Old Places, New Spaces

Old Places, New Spaces is a series of murals which celebrate the unique identity of each group through images, colour and words.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland collaborated with local Italian, Filipino, Sudanese and Somali community groups to create the mural with the assistance of local artists Marion Gaemers and Selena Smith.

The installation consists of four panels, one for each cultural group and with the assistance of the artists, the community groups have used their creative flair to highlight aspects of life in their home countries as well as their lives here in North Queensland.

Many locals will be familiar with aspects of Italian culture and the history of Italian migrants in North Queensland which dates back to the 1890’s when the first Italians arrived to work in the cane fields.

The exhibition was developed with assistance from the Regional Arts Development Fund, a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Townsville City Council to support local arts and culture.
