DISCOVER MORE ABOUT RECONCILIATION AT MTQ

The changing relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians will be explored in a free public lecture at the Museum of Tropical Queensland.

Trish Barnard, the Queensland Museum's Senior Curator of Indigenous Studies, will give her lecture on Tuesday 9 June, 12pm-1pm.

Ms Barnard said her lecture, Sorry for what? will enrich the cultural experience of a wide audience by providing an understanding of the history and circumstances that changed the social and political relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

"My talk will describe the path towards reconciliation and the major landmarks on the way such as the Mabo decision, the 1967 Referendum and the National Apology to the Stolen Generations among them," Ms Barnard said.

"For the audience, and I hope for younger Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders, I hope to affirm a sense of identity and connection to Indigenous heritage and these issues which have impacted on contemporary life."

MTQ Director Peter McLeod said the lecture was an opportunity for North Queenslanders to honour the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia.

"MTQ is committed to telling the stories of North Queenslanders and the Indigenous rights and reconciliation journey has been a major theme in the lives of countless people," Mr McLeod said.

MTQ's Discover More Talks are held on the second Tuesday of every month from 12pm-1pm and aim to promote the work of experts in fields relevant to North Queensland.

Entry to the Museum of Tropical Queensland is free for residents of local councils through the Council Community Pass, generously supported by Townsville, Burdekin and Charters Towers councils.

The Museum of Tropical Queensland, a campus of the Queensland Museum, is open from 9.30am to 5pm daily.
