The Museum of Tropical Queensland documents and interprets Queensland's tropical heritage for present and future generations through excellence in research. The Museum of Tropical Queensland represents the Queensland Museum in North Queensland. Its collections cover areas of pure and applied sciences, the natural environment, maritime and social history. It advises the Government and informs the community on these topics.

The Museum houses the Maritime Archaeology and Tropical Conservation Departments of the Queensland Museum. It is an internationally recognised centre for the study of corals of the Great Barrier Reef and staghorn corals of the world. It specialises in the taxonomic study of the diverse tropical biota of Queensland and the Indo-Pacific region.

The museum's role is to

  • Control and manage the collections of tropical marine specimens, maritime and indigenous artefacts and other property under its care
  • Meet government, institutional and community needs in the natural and applied sciences, technology and history through
    • Maintaining and developing comprehensive research collections
    • Promoting and excelling in scientific, conservation and maritime archaeology research
    • Providing a full range of educational services
    • Assisting in the repatriation of secret and sacred objects from tropical Queensland Providing accurate information to Government to assist it to adequately maintain services to tropical north Queensland

It performs these roles in the fields of

  • Maritime archaeology specialising in the wreck of HMS Pandora and other significant wrecks in Queensland waters
  • Marine biology specialising in corals, benthic animals and marine mammals
  • Interpretation of tropical Queensland's fossil heritage
  • Interpretation of tropical Queensland's cultural heritage
  • Hands-on science education in pure and applied science In addition it provides
  • Temporary exhibits interpreting the diversity of North Queensland's culture
  • Operation of exhibition design and maintenance facilities
  • Management of property under its control
