What does a Volunteer Guide do?
Volunteer Guides make visitors welcome, provide information, conduct guided tours, work with school students and support museum staff in the production and presentation of interpretive materials. Depending on your time, skills and interests, you can participate in a range of museum activities.

Do I need special skills?
Being comfortable speaking to a group of people is desirable, as well as a firm commitment to the program and its goals. Applicants must be 18 years old or over.

After submitting a completed application form to the Museum applicants are interviewed and those selected attend a training course. Applicants are matched up with mentors (current volunteers) who guide their training. Prior to acceptance, applicants need to successfully complete the training program and satisfy the disclosure criteria.

What is expected of me as a volunteer?
Volunteer Guides are asked to make a commitment to volunteer 4 hours per week for the first 12 months. If you are able to volunteer only on weekends you may contribute less time after discussion with the Volunteer Coordinator.

What are the benefits of being a Volunteer Guide?
Our Volunteer Guide training program provides you with fascinating insights into the museum and its displays of natural history and culture of North Queensland.

You will have opportunities to participate in excursions, meet new friends and become part of a team of enthusiastic and dedicated museum supporters. A range of discounts are offered to our volunteers, in addition to parking privileges while on duty.

Work Experience and Vocational Placements

Work experience and vocational placements at the Queensland Museum aim to provide students with an opportunity to relate their studies to the workplace, prepare them for the demands and expectations of the working world, and help them to make informed career decisions by assessing their aptitudes and interests.

If you are a student and would like to experience the workings of a museum environment complete an Application for Work Experience [new window 91 KB .doc] and return it:
